Charles Dolan, a media icon who changed the entertainment industry forever, passed away at the age of 98 on December 28, 2024. His family confirmed that the billionaire businessman died of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the way people experience television and media.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father and patriarch, Charles Dolan,” the family shared in an official statement.
Dolan was widely known as the founder of HBO, a platform that redefined premium television. His influence didn’t stop there. Cablevision Systems Corp., another brainchild of Dolan’s, brought cable services into millions of homes, changing the media landscape permanently.
While his professional accomplishments defined much of his public legacy, his personal life also drew admiration, particularly his enduring bond with his late wife, Helen Ann Dolan.
Charles Dolan’s Wife Died in 2023
Dolan’s passing comes just over a year after the loss of his wife, Helen Ann Dolan, who passed away at the age of 96 on August 19, 2023. The couple’s marriage spanned more than seven decades, beginning in the early 1950s.
Helen wasn’t just a partner in life but a driving force behind many of the couple’s philanthropic ventures. She was a talented artist and musician who used her skills to enrich communities. The Helen A. Dolan Center at Friends Academy stands as a tribute to her contributions to the arts. The center, equipped with modern facilities, became a haven for music, theater, dance, and visual arts.
The Dolans were also known for their generosity in education. In 2000, Charles and Helen made a $25 million donation to Fairfield University, which led to the creation of the Fairfield Dolan School of Business. Their commitment to giving back left an enduring impact on institutions and communities across the country.
Their philanthropy extended to other causes as well, including a $125,000 contribution to Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign
