Sergio Pettis After UFC Became A Bellator Fighter
After parting ways with the UFC, Sergio, too, became a free agent which was something his older brother had also done in Dec 2020.
Then in Oct 2019, Sergio signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator MMA. This however was different from his older brother who now fights in the Professional Fighters League of the founder Don Davis. Following his switch from the UFC to Bellator, Sergio started to defy critics who often panned him for his inability to finish. Shortly after joining the Bellator, the 5 foot 6 inches tall fighter stated he had come (to the BMMA) to make a legacy for himself, build his name up and get some belts of his own.
In his BMMA debut, Sergio got a first-round submission victory against the California-born Alfred Khashakyan via guillotine choke. On his second promotional fight at Bellator 242, the ex-UFC fighter fought the New Jersey-born Ricky Bandejas in the main event. The younger Pettis emerged victorious thanks to his calm game plan. The result made him eligible for a title fight against the winner of that BMMA’s other match between Juan Archuleta and Patchy Mix; the former won.
The title match between Archuleta and Sergio however couldn’t happen in the wake of the global pandemic of 2020. It nonetheless happened at Bellator 258 on May 7, 2021. In the match for the bantamweight championship, Pettis dominated Archuleta and convincingly secured the victory via unanimous decision.
Ahead of his fight against Archuleta, the former NAFC bantamweight champion addressed the topic of being related to Anthony and making his own identity against his older brother’s spotlight.
I feel like I have built my own legacy. There’s a lot of media saying I’m the little brother still which I am. I’m always going to be Anthony’s little brother.
said the fighter with 22 wins during his interview with MMA Mania.
Anthony Pettis Made $30,000 By Betting On His Brother Sergio
Not only Anthony is related to Sergio but the older has also made money off of his little sibling. Back in Dec 2021, Anthony won nearly $30,000 on a $10,000 bet he made on his brother, Sergio to beat Kyoji Horiguchi. The fight happened at Bellator 272.
Before the fight, the money line on Sergio winning the bout was +175. When it came to betting, the youngest Pettis who was defending the bantamweight belt was really an underdog. The Phenom, however, won the match which added a profit of $17,500 to his older brother’s $10,000 giving him a total return of $27,500.
The fight then again wasn’t easy for the Bellator 272 winner. The younger Pettis found himself down on the scorecard in the fourth round and looked like almost losing his title. Pettis however turned around the tie and knocked out Horiguchi in round four.
