A year before Hugh divorced his second wife, he began dating model and TV personality Crystal Harris. They tied the knot on December 31, 2012, until his death.

The founder of Playboy magazine Hugh died on September 27, 2017, in Los Angeles California. He reportedly died of sepsis brought on by an E. coli infection, at his home in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California. At the time of his death, he was 91 years of age.

He was buried at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, besides Marilyn Monroe for which he had paid $75000 back in 1992. Talking to Los Angeles Times about the same in 2009, he stated,
