Anderson Cooper’s Parents Had Been Married Until His Father’s Death
Cooper’s parents, Gloria and Wyatt, shared a deeply connected marriage that lasted 15 years before being tragically cut short. Gloria, the only child of railroad heir Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt of the Vanderbilt family, married Wyatt, an accomplished author and screenwriter, on December 24, 1963.

The couple had two sons, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, born on January 27, 1965, and Anderson Cooper, born on June 3, 1967. Wyatt, known for his deep love of family, wrote in his 1975 memoir, Families: A Memoir and a Celebration, “It is in the family that we learn almost all we ever know of loving. In my sons’ youth, their promise, their possibilities, my stake in immortality is invested.”
Tragically, Wyatt’s life came to an untimely end on January 5, 1978, at just 50 years old. He passed away during open-heart surgery following a heart attack the writer had suffered the previous December.

Vanderbilt passed away at her Manhattan home on June 17, 2019, at the age of 95, following a battle with stomach cancer. She was laid to rest alongside her son Carter and her late husband Wyatt in the Cooper plot within the Vanderbilt Family Cemetery on Staten Island, New York.
Anderson was Gloria’s third son. She had two older sons, Leopold Stanislaus “Stan” Stokowski, born on August 22, 1950, and Christopher Stokowski, born on January 31, 1952, from her second marriage to conductor Leopold Stokowski. Their union, despite the 42-year age gap, lasted from April 1945 until their divorce in October 1955.
