The journalist is the daughter of Edward Ephrem O’Brien and Estela O’Brien. Her dad was a sharpshooter in the military as well as a mechanical engineering professor at Stony Brook University. Soledad’s mother’s Estela, on the other hand, was a teacher at Smithtown High School West and used to teach French and English.
Her mummy grew up in a poor Cuban family and left Fidel Castro’s regime to come to the United States. She then attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and met Soldedad’s dad at the college. Her father was originally from Queensland, in Australia.

Soledad O’Brien’s father Edward passed away due to a lung complication at age 85 in Feb 2019. She announced the sad news on Twitter. She wrote on a throwback photo of her parents,

O’Brien also worked as a co-anchor of the Weekend Today, a news and talk morning television show on NBC with David Bloom. She was part of the show from July 1999 to July 2003.
In 2003, the media personality joined CNN. She co-anchored American Morning, the flagship morning program on CNN from July 2003-April 2007. “The reason we decided to start a foundation was because in a lot of the travels that I was doing and a lot of the stories I was working on, I’d meet incredible people, usually young people, who were this close [indicates an inch’s length with her thumb and forefinger] to realizing their dream. Sometimes they just couldn’t fund their education. Sometimes they just couldn’t pay for day care so they could finish high school. And we realized there was such great need, and I had a good opportunity to meet people, and this was a really good way to underwrite some of the projects that we were really personally committed to.”
