The journalist is the daughter of Edward Ephrem O’Brien and Estela O’Brien. Her dad was a sharpshooter in the military as well as a mechanical engineering professor at Stony Brook University. Soledad’s mother’s Estela, on the other hand, was a teacher at Smithtown High School West and used to teach French and English.

Her mummy grew up in a poor Cuban family and left Fidel Castro’s regime to come to the United States. She then attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and met Soldedad’s dad at the college. Her father was originally from Queensland, in Australia.

Back in the 50s and 60s, mixed-race marriages were banned in Maryland. Therefore, Soledad’s dad and mom went to Washington, D.C., and got married in 1958.

Lost Her Parents in the Same Year

Soledad O’Brien’s father Edward passed away due to a lung complication at age 85 in Feb 2019. She announced the sad news on Twitter. She wrote on a throwback photo of her parents,

“My dad passed away last night. He was 85. He was a sharpshooter in the military. A professional athlete. A scientist. Here he is with my mom (and me) in 1966:”

Tragically, Soledad also lost her mother, 40 days after her dad’s demise. She revealed the sad news, posting a teenage photo of her mom on her Twitter,

Soledad O’Brien began her journalism career working as an associate producer at WBZ-TV. She also worked as a news writer for the channel. In 1991, the journalist went on to join NBC News and started a job as a field producer for Nightly News and Weekend Today.

O’Brien also worked as a co-anchor of the Weekend Today, a news and talk morning television show on NBC with David Bloom. She was part of the show from July 1999 to July 2003.

In 2003, the media personality joined CNN. She co-anchored American Morning, the flagship morning program on CNN from July 2003-April 2007. She spent over a year (Jan 2012-March 2013), working as an anchor of Starting Point, a morning TV show. In late March 2013, Soledad left the network and formed Starfish Media Group, the production company.

O’Brien Runs PowHERful Foundation With Her Spouse

The loving lovebirds are the co-founder of PowHERful Foundation (it was previously known as Starfish Foundation and Soledad O’Brien & Brad Raymond Foundation), an education foundation. It mainly assists young women to help them start college, providing financial assistance, and mentorship to them.

It was founded in 2011. Soledad told the main reason behind its initiation is to help young people who come from a poor financial background. While describing the motto of the organization, Soledad said,

“The reason we decided to start a foundation was because in a lot of the travels that I was doing and a lot of the stories I was working on, I’d meet incredible people, usually young people, who were this close [indicates an inch’s length with her thumb and forefinger] to realizing their dream. Sometimes they just couldn’t fund their education. Sometimes they just couldn’t pay for day care so they could finish high school. And we realized there was such great need, and I had a good opportunity to meet people, and this was a really good way to underwrite some of the projects that we were really personally committed to.”
